What is an ostomy?
Someone might need an ostomy when part of their digestive or urinary system isn’t working properly due to illness, injury, or surgery. An ostomy is a new way for waste (stool or urine) to leave the body through a surgical opening in the belly called a stoma.
People with an ostomy use a special, discreet pouch called an ostomy bag to collect waste, replacing the normal function of the bladder, intestine, or colon. The pouch attaches to the stoma on the outside of the belly and needs to be changed or emptied several times a day by the person or their caregiver.
Ostomy types
Colostomy – a surgical opening made from the colon (part of the large intestine). It lets stool leave the body through the belly instead of the rectum.
Ileostomy – a surgical opening made from the ileum (last part of the small intestine). It allows waste to exit the body before it reaches the colon.
Urostomy – a surgical opening created to divert urine from the kidney to the outside of the belly. It allows urine to exit the body before it passes through the bladder or urethra (the tube that normally carries urine out through the vagina or penis).
